Life on a Yangzi river 29.09.02 - 2.10.02

| Day 35: Chongqing - Fengdu Hopped in to boat in a evening. Poor bastard that I am, I only could afford third class tickets, which means 8 people in a same cabin. At least it had AC. Soon after we left from harbor, men in my cabin started to eat. Somebody gave me chopsticks and glass of ricewine, without asking if I wanted to join them. Food was great, but that ricewine tasted so bad I barely manage to finish it without throwing up. After we men finished our suppers, every women in a cabin made instant noodles to themselfs. Really old school type of people... Day 36: Fengdu - Wushan
First stop was in Fengdu.... in 6 AM! This is one of those cities that will be underwater in a year 2003, when they rise water level 135 meters. Quite a ghost town already. Got some fruits and pancakes for breakfast and went back to my boat. Life was pretty mellow: Watching scenery and taking naps. Only thing that bothered me, was smog. It was so thick you could only see 500 metres away. Stopped at temple of Zhan Fei in a evening and I bought some supper from there. Day 37: Wushan - Wuhan
Woke up even earlier today.... at 5AM, when all my cabin mates left for three little gorges cruise. I was interested in that too, but not for this god forsaken hour, so I decided to sleep couple more hours and then catch a smaller boat to little gorges. Well, that`s not how it worked, I found out. They had busses waiting outside the boat which transported them to little gorges starting point. So I got left behind and had to forget that trip. When everyone returned from their excursion, I found out that we`ll arrive in Yichang around 10 PM, which meant that it was going to be too dark to see three gorges dam. Damned. At least one thing worked out today: I managed to catch a minibus to Wuhan, when we arrived to Yichang. Day 38: Wuhan - Guangzhou
Arrived in Wuhan around 4 AM. Took a cab straight to train station and tried to buy ticket for a next train to Guangzhou. It turned out that first train with tickets doesn`t leave until 7 PM and they don`t have sleeper tickets available until tomorrow. So hard seat ticket it is then, this should be interesting experience, I thought. And as it turned out it was: I didn`t get any sleep at all. Carriage had twice as many people in it as there were seats. |
