Kathmandu 13.2 - 17.2.2004

Day 24: Siliguri - Kathmandu

Hopped in a bus to Panitanki in a morning and crossed border to Nepal. I found out that there isn`t any sleeperbusses to Kathmandu, just regular ones and its going to be 18 hour ride, since we have to stop at night. I guess they don`t wanna take any chances with those maoists freedomfighters / terrorists (pick one). First checkpoint was just few kilometers from Kakarbhitta and every man in a bus had to go through it by foot, well...except me. I guess I`m not guerilla material?

Day 25: Kathmandu

25 hours and about six checkpoints later we arrived in Kathmandu. Those extra 7 hours were result of a maoist activity along the road we were supposed to drive, so we had to take a longer route. My legs and ass were totally numb, so I rested in my hotel for a while before I rewarded myself with pizza and couple of cold ones.

Day 26: Kathmandu

Went to Durbar square after breakfast. Those temples were pretty amazing, especially Kumari Bahal: home of the living goddess. Great place to sit around and just peoplewatch. Later on visited old hippie hangout of the sixties: Freak street, which was a bit of a disappointment. Just wondered around Thamel in a evening, cool place with excellent restaurants and all kinds of cheap stuff to buy.

Day 27: Kathmandu

I didn`t have any plans for today, so I just slept late and did couple of those walking tours from lonely planet guide in afternoon. Bought busticket to Pokhara and made reservation for a motorcycle for tomorrow and just took it easy for the rest of the evening.

Day 28: Kathmandu

Weather was pretty fresh in a morning, so I had to wait for a while before it got warm enough to drive a motorcycle. First stop of the day was buddhist monastry of Swayambhunath. Main stupa and smaller temples were nice, but somehow it was a bit too commercial place with all those gift shops. Next stop Pashupatinath: Hindu temple and cremation site. Tickets were way too expensive considering I couldn`t even enter the temple cause I`m non-hindu. It was interesting to see creamation burial, though. I still had some time and gas left, so I drove to Patan: city next to Kathmandu and took a walking tour there.
