Hungary 2.7 - 5.7 2005

Day 26: Kosice - Eger

Take notes, children! Don`t drink twelve pints of beer on night before, if your bus leaves 7AM ! Whole trip was kind of blur to me, but I made it to Eger. Town had three hostels, but each one of them was packed so I had stay in motel which ate my whole daily budget. My first impression of Hungary was that it is much more expensive country, than it`s neighbouring Slovakia. Oh, and it was raining all day.

Day 27: Eger

It stopped raining for awhile, so I decided to checkout Eger castle. Old bag at the counter refused to give me student discount, since I only had finnish studentcard and not that ISIC one. Castle was interesting enough, but I wonder why those displays portrayed hungarians as brave heroes, when in fact ottomans whipped their sorry asses and dominated this whole country for hundreds of years...

Day 28: Eger - Debrecen

My guidebook didn`t even mention Debrecen, but yesterday I printed map of this city from Internet, so I managed to locate local tourist office and they arranged room for me from local student dormitory. Headed straight to trainstation and bought myself a ticket to Oradea. I don`t understand how buying one ticket requires 15 minutes of paper pushing and 10 stamps, like it did in Debrecen.

Day 29: Debrecen - Oradea

Border crossing to Romania was smooth, except that border guard didn`t appreciate my smart ass "as long as it takes" answer to his question about duration of my stay in Romania? For a moment I was afraid he`s gonna do cavity search on me... All cheap hotels in Oradea were under renovation and only hostel had jacked up their prices. At first they were asking 36 euros for a night, but I managed to negotiate it to 20 euros.
